The Summer Chemistry No One Measures — Your Child’s Warm-Weather Toxic Load
Every June, the same conversation arrives in my practice in slightly different forms. A parent has read the sunscreen guide. They have swapped the chemical filters for zinc oxide, traded the soft plastic tumbler for stainless steel, and started checking labels on the bug spray. They are doing the work, and the instinct behind it is correct. What they want to know is whether it is enough — and underneath that question is a quieter one they rarely say aloud: how would we even know.
That second question is the one worth answering, because summer changes a child’s chemical environment in ways that are largely invisible and almost never measured.
What Summer Actually Changes
Consider what actually happens to your family between June and August. The exposures rise, and so does the body’s workload. Start with heat. Phthalates — the plasticizers that make tubing soft, packaging flexible, and water bottles squeezable — are not chemically bound to the plastic they live in. They migrate. And the rate at which they migrate into whatever the plastic touches climbs with temperature. A water bottle that sits in a hot car, a pouch of food left in a beach bag, a plastic tumbler filled with a warm drink — each becomes a more efficient delivery system for these compounds in summer than it ever is in winter. The clean swap addresses this, but only for the swaps a parent happens to think of. The exposures that matter are often the ones that are invisible precisely because they are ordinary.
Then there is the skin. Summer is the season of maximal dermal contact — sunscreen applied and reapplied across the largest surface area of the year, on the most absorptive skin in the household. This is where the conventional advice is right but incomplete. Chemical UV filters such as oxybenzone are absorbed through the skin in measurable amounts, and several behave as endocrine-disrupting compounds. Mineral filters — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — sit on the surface rather than crossing it, which is why they remain the more defensible choice for a developing child. So far this matches what a careful parent already knows. What the guides do not say is that the sunscreen is one input among many, applied to a child whose total chemical load is the sum of skin, gut, and air across an entire season — and that the load is only half of the equation.
The Half No One Measures — Clearance
The half almost no one discusses is clearance.
A child’s body is not a passive container that fills with whatever it encounters. It is an active processing system, and the relevant clinical question is not only what comes in but how efficiently it goes out. Phthalates and bisphenols are handled largely through a Phase II liver pathway called glucuronidation, in which the body attaches a water-soluble molecule to the compound so it can be carried out in the urine. This is elegant biochemistry, and it works well — when the raw materials are present and the pathway is not overburdened. Glucuronidation depends on nutrient cofactors, on adequate protein, on a gut that is not leaking inflammatory signals back into circulation, and on a liver that is not already managing a heavy load from other sources. Two children with identical sunscreen and the identical water bottle can carry very different internal burdens, because they are clearing those exposures at very different rates.
This is the gap between the clean swap and the clinical picture. The swap reduces input, which is genuinely worth doing. But it tells you nothing about the child standing in front of you — nothing about how much is actually reaching their tissues, and nothing about whether their detoxification machinery is keeping pace. Two families can make the exact same product choices and have two entirely different biological situations underneath.
From Guessing to Measuring
What does it look like to actually measure this rather than guess. In functional pediatric medicine, exposure and clearance are assessable, not theoretical. Urinary phthalate and environmental phenol metabolites reflect what a child has genuinely absorbed and processed over recent days — biomonitoring, not estimation. An organic acids panel reads out from the same urine sample whether the nutrient cofactors that fuel Phase II detoxification are present and whether the pathways are running cleanly. Nutrient status testing shows whether the raw materials for clearance are stocked. Together these turn an anxious, open-ended worry — am I doing enough — into a specific, answerable clinical question: here is this child’s measured burden, here is how well they are clearing it, and here is precisely where to intervene.
That precision matters because the alternative is to chase every headline. There is always a new chemical to fear, a new product to discard, a new list circulating among parents. Lived as a strategy, this is exhausting and, more to the point, imprecise. It treats every child as if they carried the same load and cleared it at the same rate, which is not true. A child whose detoxification pathways are well-supported and whose gut is intact tolerates the ordinary exposures of modern childhood with considerable resilience. A child whose clearance is compromised — by nutrient depletion, by chronic gut inflammation, by an overburdened system — may show the effects of exposures that a sibling shrugs off entirely. The product list cannot distinguish between these two children. Measurement can.
Precision, Not Fear
I see this pattern consistently in practice. A family came to me recently with a child who was doing everything correctly on paper — the household had been meticulously cleaned up, the products were beyond reproach — and yet the child was still showing the low-grade, hard-to-pin-down symptoms that send thoughtful parents looking for answers in the first place. The reflex in that situation is to hunt for one more exposure to eliminate. What the testing showed instead was a clearance problem: the inputs were already low, but the pathways responsible for moving compounds out were under-supplied and sluggish, and a quietly inflamed gut was adding to the load. The intervention was not a longer avoidance list. It was rebuilding the machinery that does the clearing. Nothing about that child’s situation was visible from the product shelf. It was only visible in the data.
I want to be careful here, because this is a place where a great deal of fear-based content lives, and fear is not the point. The point is the opposite of fear. The reason to measure is so a family can stop guessing — so the decisions become smaller, more specific, and more confident, rather than larger and more anxious every summer. A parent who knows their child’s actual burden and clearance capacity does not need to police every plastic in the house. They need to address the one or two things the data actually flags, and then they get to relax about the rest. Precision is what makes calm possible.
Where This Leaves Your Family
So by all means, make the swaps. Choose the mineral sunscreen. Keep drinks out of hot plastic. Reach for the better bug spray. These are reasonable reductions in an input that is worth reducing, and the instinct that drives them is sound. Just hold them for what they are — a sensible first move, not a complete answer. The complete answer requires knowing your particular child: what they are carrying, and how well they are clearing it.
